Common errors in English: Usage of Kill and Murder

 Kill and Murder

Incorrect : He was murdered in an accident.

Correct : He was killed in an accident.

Incorrect . The cold weather murdered our tomato plants.

Correct : The cold weather killed our tomato plants.

Note: "Kill' is a general word meaning to cause any person or thing to die, but "murder” means to kill a person illegally and intentionally. For example:

He was sent to prison for murdering his wife.

You can also use assassinate, massacre, slaughter and butcher to mean killing.

But these words have different shades of meaning. For example, "to assassinate’ means to kill an important political figure. ‘To massacre' means to kill a large number of people together. “Slaughter" and "butcher' normally mean to kill animals for food but both words are also used to describe cruel or unnecessary killing of humans.
