Common errors in English: Usage of Take off and Put Off

 Take off and Put Off


Incorrect : When he came back from the party, he put off his suit.


Correct : When he came back from the party, he took off his suit.


Incorrect : She had to take off her visit owing to her illness.


Correct : She had to put off her visit owing to her illness.


Note: “To put on” means get dressed but its antonym is not "put off”. The opposite of "put on” is “take off'. One of the meanings of "put off is "to delay'.
