Common errors in English: Usage of Sit and Set

 Sit and Set


Incorrect : The sun sits in the west. 


Correct : The sun sets in the west.


Incorrect : She sat the lamp on the table. 


Correct : She set the lamp on the table.


Incorrect : You should not have set here. 


Correct : You should not have sat here.


Note: "Set' can be used both transitively and intransitively. As a transitive verb, it means ‘place’ and as intransitive it means "go down'. As a transitive verb, it has other meanings also. For example:


She set the table for dinner. 

He set the house on fire.

 He set an example of honesty. 

They set a trap for the tiger. 

I set the bird free. 

The doctor set his broken bone.

They set to Work at 7 o'clock. 

We set off/out early in the morning.
