Common errors in English: Usage of Rise and Raise

Rise and Raise


Incorrect : He raises very early in the morning.


Correct : He rises very early in the morning.


Incorrect : Please rise your hands. 


Correct : Please raise your hands. 


Note: Rise" is an intransitive verb which means "go up', 'stand up’ or 'get out of bed'. You can say: 


The price of everything is rising. 

She rose to greet her guests. 

The sun rises in the east.


One the other hand, ‘raise’ is a transitive verb which means ‘lift anything to a higher position’. It always takes an object. For example:


He raised his head. 

She raised herself from the ground.
