Common errors in English: Usage of Give up and Leave

Give up and Leave


Incorrect : You should leave smoking.


Correct : You should give up smoking. Or You should stop smoking.


Incorrect : You should not give up the party now.


Correct : You should not leave the party now.


Note: “To leave” means “go away from", whereas “to give up' a thing is to stop doing or having it. So, these two verbs are not interchangeable.
