Common errors in English: Usage of Replace and Substitute

Replace and Substitute

Incorrect : We substituted apples with/by oranges.

Correct : We replaced apples with/by oranges.

Incorrect : We replaced apples for oranges.

Correct : We substituted apples for oranges.

Note : Compare the patterns in the correct sentences above. The first sentence suggests that we put oranges in the place of apples. On the other hand, the second correct sentence suggests that we put apples in the place of oranges. "Replace' is followed by “by/with” and “substitute” is followed by “for”.
