Common errors in English: Usage of Used to and Would

Used to and Would


The modal “used to” expresses a permanent state or a repeated action in the past. For example:


They used to live in London. 

She used to play the piano.


To express past habit:


Incorrect: He would smoke. 


Correct : He used to Smoke.


Note: In this simple isolated sentence, "would” does not refer to a past action.
