Common errors in English: Usage of Steal and Rob

 Steal and Rob


Incorrect : Someone has robbed all his money. 


Correct : Someone has stolen all his money.


Incorrect : They knocked him down and stole all his money. 


Correct : They knocked him down and robbed him of all his money.


Incorrect : They planned to steal a bank. 


Correct : They planned to rob a bank.


Incorrect : He was stolen on the way home. 


Correct : He was robbed on the way home.


Note: “To steal' is to take someone's property without their knowledge but “to rob" means to take someone's property using violence or threat. Moreover, one steals things, but one robs a place or someone of their things.
