Common errors in English: Usage of Sleep and Go to bed

 Sleep and Go to bed

Incorrect : I shall sleep early tonight. 

Correct : I shall go to bed early tonight.

Incorrect : He has been going to bed for two hours.

Correct : He has been sleeping for two hours. 

Note : "To sleep' and "to go to bed” are not synonymous. “To go to bed" denotes the act of lying down on a bed in preparation for sleep. A person does not go to bed and sleep at the same moment.
