Common errors in English: Usage of Like and Love

Like and Love

Incorrect : Everybody loves honest people.

Correct : Everybody likes honest people.

Incorrect : I like all my children alike.

Correct : I love all my children alike.

Note: The difference between 'like' and 'love' is not in kind but in degree. "Love' is a stronger word than "like". It often suggests desire for something or strong friendship for somebody. For example:

I'd love a cup of coffee.

I love my mother very much.

But "like' is a general term which suggests fondness for a person or thing. It can be used in the sense of "enjoy'. For example:

I like watching television (= enjoy)

He likes birds. (= he is fond of birds)
