Common errors in English: Usage of Jury

Jury


This is a collective noun which may be followed by a singular or plural verb. For example:


The jury has/have given a verdict of guilty.


But-


Incorrect : The jury was divided in their opinions. 


Correct : The jury were divided in their opinions.


Note: When a collective noun denotes the individual members of the group and not the group as a whole, a plural verb should be used after it.
