Common errors in English: Usage of Discover and Invent

Discover and Invent


Incorrect: Columbus invented America in 1492. 


Correct : Columbus discovered America in 1492. 


Incorrect : Who discovered computer? 


Correct: Who invented computer?


Note: You discover something that existed before but was not known, such as a place or a fact. You can also say:  


We soon discovered the truth. 


But you invent something that did not exist before, such as a machine or a method.
