Common errors in English: Usage of Avenge and Revenge

Avenge and Revenge 


These two words can be used interchangeably as verbs. For example:


They avenged/revenged his death by burning the village. 

They avenged/revenged themselves on their enemy.


But ‘avenge’ cannot be used as a noun. For example:


Incorrect: They took avenge on their enemy.


Correct : They took revenge on their enemy.
