Common errors in English: Usage of Hear and Listen

Hear and Listen


Incorrect : I listened them talking over there. 


Correct : I heard them talking over there.


Incorrect: I was hearing the radio news. 


Correct : I was listening to the radio news.


Note: “Hear' does not imply any attention. To hear is to take in sound with the ears, whether you want to or not. But “to listen' is to pay attention in order to hear. You can say:


If you listen hard, you can hear what they are saying.
