Common errors in English: Usage of Grow and Grow up

 Grow and Grow up


Incorrect : Grass grows up after rain. 


Correct : Grass grows after rain.


Incorrect : What do you want to be when you grow? 


Correct: What do you want to be when you grow up? 


Note: Grow means ‘increase in size by natural development’ but ‘grow up' means 'develop into a man or woman'. 'Grow’ has other meanings too. For example: 


Jute grows in plenty in Bangladesh.

We grow flowers in our garden. 

He grew a beard. 

Nights grow cold in winter.
