Common errors in English: Usage of Past Simple As if.

As if + past simple


Incorrect . He talks as if he knows everything. 


Correct : He talks as if he knew everything.


Incorrect : She spends as if she is very rich. 


Correct : She spends as if she were very rich.


Note: The phrase ‘as if’ is followed by the past simple tense. In case of the ‘to be’ verb, whatever may be the subject the form ‘were’ is usually used.
