Common errors in English: Usage of Act and Action

Act and Action


Action used as a singular countable noun has almost the same meaning as act. You can say:


This is a very kind act/action.


But in certain fixed phrases, you should use act, not action.


Incorrect : It was an action of cruelty. 


Correct : It was an act of cruelty.


Action can be used in various senses where it cannot be replaced by act.


Incorrect : The police had to take firm act to deal with the murder.


Correct : The police had to take firm action to deal with the murder.
