Common errors in English: Usage of Between and Among

Between and Among

Incorrect : There was a quarrel among the two girls.

Correct : There was a quarrel between the two girls.

Incorrect : She was lost between the crowd.

Correct : She was lost among the crowd.

Note: When you are talking about only two people or things, use "between and if you are talking about a group of three or more people or things, use "among". However, to show division or sharing, you can use “between” even when more than two people or things are involved. For example:

He divided the money between all his sons.

With the verb "distribute” you should use either "among” or “to', not ‘between'. For example:

He distributed the prizes to/among the winners.
