Common errors in English: Usage of On, Above and Over

 On, Above and Over

Incorrect : Your books are over the bed.

Correct : Your books are on the bed.

Incorrect : Raise your arms on your head.

Correct : Raise your arms above your head.

Incorrect : The cat jumped on the wall.

Correct : The cat jumped over the wall.

Note: “On” suggests the idea of touch. The prepositions above and over can often be used in the same way. For example:

We flew above/over the clouds.

They suggest that the two things are not in touch with each other. However, "over” is mostly used to express the idea of movement. ‘Above' mainly suggests a higher position.
