Common errors in English: Usage of Can + bare infinitive

 Can + bare infinitive

Incorrect: He can to swim very well.

Correct : He can swim very well.

Incorrect : She can not to dance well.

Correct : She cannot dance well.

Note: A modal is usually followed by a bare infinitive (an infinitive without "to"). The negative form of "can" is "cannot'’ which is always written as a single word. Most modals are followed by a bare infinitive. For example:

I could not go there yesterday.

May I come in?

He might go there tomorrow.

I shall/will help you.

You should obey your parents.

It must rain to-night.

Only "ought” and “used” are followed by a to-infinitive. For example:

You ought to obey your teachers.

He used to help me every now and then.
