Common errors in English: Usage of Vacant and Vacate

 Vacant and Vacate


Incorrect : Students were asked to vacant their halls.


Correct : Students were asked to vacate their halls.


Incorrect : Some posts are lying vacate.


Correct : Some posts are lying vacant.


Note: Vacant is always an adjective which means empty. It cannot be used as a verb. On the other hand, vacate is always a transitive verb. It cannot be used as an adjective.
