Common errors in English: Usage of Sweet and Sweetly

 Sweet and Sweetly


Incorrect : Sugar tastes sweetly. 


Correct : Sugar tastes sweet.


Incorrect : The girl sang very sweet.


Correct : The girl sang very sweetly.


Note : Sweet is an adjective and sweetly is an adverb. Taste in the correct sentence above is a linking verb which must be followed by an adjective and not by an adverb. On the other hand, sang in the example above is an intransitive verb which should be followed by an adverb and not by an adjective.
