Common errors in English: Usage of Cheap and Chief

Cheap and Chief


Incorrect : Vegetables become chief in winter. 


Correct : Vegetables become cheap in winter.


Incorrect : Rice is the cheap crop in this area. 


Correct : Rice is the chief crop in this area.


Note: "Cheap' means low in price, whereas 'chief’ means 'main'. ‘Chief’ is a non-gradable adjective. You cannot say:


Rice is very chief. Or Rice is chiefer than jute in this area.
