Material noun
Incorrect : The gold is a precious metal.
Correct : Gold is a precious metal.
Note: Material nouns, used in a general sense, do not take any article before them. But when they are used in a particular sense, the definite article 'the' is required. For example:
The gold of this ring is pure.
