Common errors in English: Usage of Drown and Sink

 Drown and Sink

Incorrect : As he did not know how to swim, he sank in the river.

Correct : As he did not know how to swim, he drowned in the river.

Incorrect : The ship drowned in the ocean.

Correct : The ship sank/was sunk in the river.

Note: “Drown" or “to be drowned" is used only of living things and it means “to die” or “cause to die” by being under water. On the other hand "sink” is used of both persons or things and means to go down under the surface of water. It can be used both intransitively and transitively in more than one sense.
