Common error in English: Usage of Comprise + object

Comprise + object


Incorrect : This book comprises of five chapters. 


Correct . This book comprises five chapters.


Note: “Comprise" is a transitive verb which means “consist of”. You can use “comprise' and "consist of” interchangeably. For example:


The united kingdom consists of/comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.


You can also say:


England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland comprise/constitute the United kingdom.


Do not use "comprise' or "consist of” in progressive forms.
