Incorrect : The rich is helping the flood-affected people.
Correct : The rich are helping the flood-affected people.
Note : The rich does not mean the rich man; it means the rich people. So it is followed by a plural verb. Similarly:
Incorrect : Only the brave deserves the fair.
Correct : Only the brave deserve the fair.
