Common errors in English: Usage of Predicative adjective

Predicative adjective


Incorrect : This is an alive fish. 


Correct : This fish is alive.


Note: "alive” is an adjective which has only a predicative use. That means, it always comes after the noun or pronoun it modifies. It cannot be used attributively. Similarly:


Incorrect : He is an afraid man. 


Correct : He is a man who is afraid of everything.
