Common errors in English: Usage of Inform someone of something

 Inform someone of something


Incorrect : We informed the police the matter. 


Correct : We informed the police of the matter. Or We informed the matter to the police.


Note: “Inform” (with or without a preposition) can be used in the passive voice in the following way: 


I was not informed.

I was not informed of the decision.
