Common errors in English: Usage of To school, to the school

To school, to the school


Incorrect : My son goes to the school. 


Correct : My son goes to school.


Note: "To go to school” means “to be a student' but “to go to the school” means "to visit the school’. Similarly, ‘to leave school’ means ‘to stop being a student’, while “to leave the school means “to leave the school premises'. Similarly:


Incorrect: He goes to the mosque on Friday. 


Correct : He goes to mosque on Friday.


Note: "To go to mosque' means to go to mosque in order to pray" but "going to the mosque" means 'going and visiting the mosque'. You can now distinguish between "go to bed” and “go to a/the bed”, "go to prison" and "go to a/the prison”, “go to market” and “go to a/the market, “go to sea” and “go to the Sea', 'go to hospital’ and ‘go to a/the hospital.’


Incorrect : He was sick and went to the hospital. 


Correct : He was sick and went to hospital.
