Common errors in English: Usage of Say to someone

 Say to someone

Incorrect : He said me, "Are you ill?”

Correct : He said to me, "Are you ill'?"

Note: In the correct sentence here 'said’ is an intransitive verb and it is followed by a preposition. It can be used as a transitive verb. For example:

He said this.

He said that he was ill.

But it cannot be followed by an object like "me', 'you' or “us” which refer to people (or any object which refers to anything spoken to).
