Common errors in English: usage of surprised for.

Surprised (= astonished)

Incorrect: We were surprised for his reaction. 

Correct : We were surprised at/by his reaction.

Note: Some other adjectives like this are also followed by ‘at/by’. 

For example:

I was amazed at/by her beauty. 
We were astonished at/by his calmness.
